Coffee is an important agricultural export for India. It is grown in over 10 states, and employs over 6 million people. However, the Indian coffee sector is facing a number of challenges, including climate change, pests and diseases, and low prices.
Tengio, a technology first agency in London, UK and South India Coffee Company's Labs division are developing an AI system called Tekisic to help coffee growers in India overcome these challenges. Tekisic is a proof-of-concept system that is trained on a public dataset of data collected by the Indian Coffee Board, including data on climate, soil conditions, crop yields, pests and diseases, and farming practices.
Tekisic can use this data to help a grower identify the best coffee varieties to grow in a particular region, optimise crop yields, and detect pests and diseases. The system is easy to use and can be accessed through a web browser and a Google account.
Tekisic is still in the early stages of development, but it has the potential to be a valuable tool for Indian coffee growers. By helping growers to improve their yields, reduce their risks, and increase their profits, Tekisic can help to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Indian coffee sector.
Here are some specific ways in which Tekisic can help Indian coffee growers:
- Identify the best coffee varieties to grow in a particular region. Tekisic can take into account factors such as climate, soil conditions, and altitude to recommend the best coffee varieties for a grower to grow. This can help growers to increase their yields and produce higher quality coffee.
- Optimize crop yields. Tekisic can help growers to optimize their crop yields by providing recommendations on irrigation, fertilization, and pruning practices. This can help growers to reduce their costs and increase their profits.
- Information regarding pests and diseases. Tekisic can help growers to identify pests and diseases early on, so that they can take corrective action before the pests and diseases cause significant damage. This can help growers to reduce their crop losses and improve their yields.
Tekisic is currently in the pilot page and the proof of concept can be accessed at https://tekisic.tengio.com. Please send any feedback to tekisic@sicc.coffee
