SICC Receives Blue Tokai Award 2024–25

Recognised for Pioneering Research in Climate-Resilient Coffee Species

We are delighted to announce that South India Coffee Company (SICC) has been honoured with the Blue Tokai Award 2024–25, acknowledging our work in developing climate-resilient coffee species through our dedicated research wing, SICC Labs.

Advancing Coffee Sustainability Through Scientific Innovation

At SICC Labs, our mission is to future-proof coffee cultivation by exploring and cultivating low-intervention, climate-resilient Coffea species. Our current research initiatives include:

  • Coffea Excelsa: Investigating its potential as a low-intervention, high-cupping species suitable for sustainable cultivation.
  • Rootstock Hardiness: Studying the robustness of Coffea Excelsa rootstocks on diploid and tetraploid coffee species to enhance plant resilience.
  • Natural Hybrids: Exploring hybrids between Arabica and Excelsa to combine desirable traits from both species.
  • Alternate Species Evaluation: Assessing the commercial viability of other climate-resilient species like Coffea Stenophylla and Racemosa.

Our research aims to identify coffee species that can withstand the challenges posed by climate change, ensuring the sustainability of coffee production for future generations.

Industry Recognition and Collaborative Efforts

The Blue Tokai Award celebrates entities that contribute significantly to the coffee industry through innovation and sustainability. This recognition underscores our commitment to scientific research and our collaborative efforts with partners like Cultivar Coffee to develop and promote climate-resilient coffee species.

Our work has also garnered international attention, with exports of Coffea Excelsa reaching markets in the USA, UK, Netherlands, and Switzerland, reflecting the global interest in sustainable coffee solutions.

Looking Ahead: A Sustainable Coffee Future

This award serves as a catalyst for our ongoing efforts to innovate within the coffee sector. We are firmly committed to:

Developing coffee plants that require minimal intervention and are resilient to climate variability.

Collaborating with farmers to implement sustainable agricultural practices.

Engaging with the global coffee community to share knowledge and promote biodiversity.

We thank our dedicated team, research partners, and the farming communities we work alongside. Together, we are shaping a resilient and sustainable future for coffee.
